Sustainability
Practical sustainability can be achieved on any project.
Practical sustainability can be achieved on any project.
We believe it is our responsibility to help protect our planet for future generations. Given the enormous impact of building construction and operation on the world’s environmental footprint, we recognize our role in this task is imperative.
SōL Harris/Day Architecture is a strong proponent of sustainable design. The firm is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and has seven LEED™ Accredited Professionals, including architects, an interior designer and a construction manager. However, our consideration for the environment extends far past the framework set by LEED. We utilize strategies to reduce environmental impact, promote occupant health and well-being, and improve energy-efficiency on every project, regardless of whether the project is in pursuit of any particular certification. In fact, our past project experience has proven that it is possible to design an environmentally-conscious building without increasing project costs.
Our design strategies aim to reduce the collective environmental impacts during the production and transportation of building components, through the construction phase, and across the entire lifecycle of your building all while enhancing occupant comfort and performance. The process starts with identifying your priorities – we will host an eco-charrette to learn what the most important strategies and outcomes for your project may be (for example, energy savings, low maintenance materials, etc.). Some of the factors considered include building envelope and insulation, type and efficiency of heating and cooling systems, appropriate building siting, passive heating and cooling strategies, reused and recycled building materials, daylighting and connection with nature, alternative energy sources, rainwater harvesting and on-site stormwater management.
