The Wayne County Schools Career Center is part of the first wave of school districts to be effected by the Ohio School Facilities Commission mandate of September 2007 that all new and renovated schools must achieve LEED Silver Certification. This project is very exciting for Harris/Day because of our commitment to "green" and sustainability.
This 200,000 sf renovation will give the Career Center an updated and environmentally-friendly learning environment for the students of Wayne County. In partnership with the Career Center, Harris/Day was able to employ a variety of strategies which helped propel the project into LEED status:
- Use of rapidly renewable materials, such as linoleum flooring throughout. (Linoleum is a natural product, made of cork flour, linseed oil, and other sustainable resources.)
- Reuse of 75% of the existing exterior walls and roof
- Water conservation measures, including low-flow toilets and faucets, resulting in 40% water reduction overall
- Construction waste management measures to lower the amount of demolition debris sent to local landfills by 75%
- Use of materials containing 20% recycled content
- Use of regional materials that were extracted, harvested, and manufactured within 500 miles to reduce transportation fuel
- 50% of all wood used in the renovation is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council
- Low-emitting materials to improve indoor air quality for building occupants
- HVAC systems designed to provide a high level of thermal comfort to occupants
- Exceptional energy performance, 28% above a high-efficiency building, through use of new variable refrigerant flow technology
