It seems Whipple Avenue is the place to live and/or work these days. New buildings are popping up on both sides of the street, and current owners are renovating their existing spaces to accommodate growing staffs and the needs of their customers.
H/D recently collaborated with the Parker Construction Group and a local business partner to develop a new office/condo park located on Whipple Avenue, NW just south of Power Resources. The 4-acre site was masterplanned to provide three office/condo buildings arranged in a manner to maximize ‘green space’. This design approach created ‘landscape pockets’ for courtyards and patio areas to provide an office park setting and outdoor break areas for employees. Because each building houses more than one tenant, the proposed architectural character needed to vary in order to create individualized, unique ‘doorfronts’ for each condo unit. The individuality also complements the natural setting of the building complex itself. This look is achieved through a mix of one and two story buildings with a blend of complementary materials, textures and colors.
H/D didn’t limit its services to architecture only. In fact, the firm provided marketing assistance with the development of the office project. H/D designed and created computer renderings of the site plan and building exteriors to facilitate rezoning efforts with Jackson Township and to increase potential interest in the new Whipple Avenue project site.
“We’re thrilled with the progress already made this early in the process,” said partner, Bill Parker. “H/D took the vision of our partnership and created an office park development that is not available any place else in Stark County.” Great location - great opportunities...Whipple Avenue!
H/D’s ‘Green-House’ Earns ‘Best of Show’ Honors
The votes are in and one lucky canine is going to be living in style thanks to the talented designers of Harris/Day Architects in collaboration with Rice’s Nursery. Team H/D recently participated in ‘Barkitecture’ – a fundraiser for the Canton Art Institute. The award-winning project – “Green-House” – a contemporary and sustainable habitat for the dog of the 21st century, was one of 17 dog houses evaluated on overall design, craftsmanship, and canine-friendly design features.
‘Green-House’ was designed to naturally blend in with any backyard environment using planting materials, natural cedar, and a grass roof. The pond (or the dog’s water dish) uses filtered water from the green roof which is drained through the copper piping. The solution creates an architectural and practical solution to truly benefit the owner, and reflect our firm’s design vision.
Special thanks to the H/D Design & Construction Team for their hard work on this ‘paw-ticular’ design project. ‘Green-House’ along with the other one-of-a-kind dog houses will be available for purchase at a black tie auction event on August 26th at the Canton Cultural Center.
H/D Adds Two To Staff
We’re happy to announce that H/D has recently added two talented professionals to its staff. Kris Parker has joined the H/D team as a CADD draftsperson and artist. Kris is able to create concept sketches for proposed projects in ink and marker. A resident of Wadsworth, Kris has eagerly started her ‘second career’ in the world of architecture after successfully raising a family. Also joining the firm is Brant Miller. Brant is a fourth year architecture student at Kent State University. The West Akron resident will be a summer intern with H/D, where he’ll learn about the ‘real world’ in an architecture office.
